This was Jay's fourth competition in The Coastal Challenge. The course started with a climb up Cerro Chato (near Vulcan Arenal), traversed the Costa Rican mountains, rain forest, and Pacific coastline, ending up near Nicaragua. Jay completed the Adventure series of the run and celebrated his 70th birthday on the fourth day of the competition. Jay ran the entire race with old friend Walt Esser.
