1000 Year Old Tree : While we were at Paraiso del Quetzal, our tour guide took us further up the mountain to see a 1000 year old mountain cypress tree. The trunk, while hollow, was supported by an intricate network of vines. The tree was still very much alive.

Paraiso del Quetzal : On our return from Chirripo to Puriscal, we stopped at Paraiso del Quetzal hoping to see a queztal, an extremely rare bird of Costa Rica. The proprietor, Jorge Serrano, took us on an hour-long hike, and we were rewarded by sighting more than a dozen of these beautiful birds in the wild.

The Coastal Challenge 2008 : This was Jay's fourth competition in The Coastal Challenge. The course started with a climb up Cerro Chato (near Vulcan Arenal), traversed the Costa Rican mountains, rain forest, and Pacific coastline, ending up near Nicaragua. Jay completed the Adventure series of the run and celebrated his 70th birthday on the fourth day of the competition. Jay ran the entire race with old friend Walt Esser.
